Trust is the cornerstone of progress in health and science. When people feel confident that their rights are respected, they are more likely to participate in studies, share their data, and contribute to medical breakthroughs that benefit everyone. Ethics by design strengthens this trust by ensuring that respect, fairness, and transparency are built into every interaction from the start. Yet across Europe, many communities still hesitate to engage in research, often because they are unsure how information is used or whether their perspectives are taken into account.
The READI Project (Research in Europe and Diversity Inclusion) is working to change this. Its goal is to make clinical research more equitable and representative by building a digital space where everyone can access clear information, connect with opportunities, and trust that ethical principles are being upheld from start to finish.
Ethics by design: values built into technology
At the heart of READI’s approach lies an ambitious digital platform that will make it easier for people to learn about, find, and take part in clinical studies. This platform is not just a technical solution, it is a reflection of ethical commitment.
From the first design stages, READI’s teams have followed the principle of ethics by design. That means embedding respect, fairness, and transparency directly into the technology, rather than adding them as afterthoughts. Every function of the platform, from how data are stored to how users are supported, is guided by the same question: is this ethical, accessible, and inclusive?
The platform will operate as an open and secure space where people can explore research opportunities with confidence. It has been designed to prioritise safety, equity, and long-term sustainability, so that every user, especially those from communities that have historically had less access to research, can feel empowered to participate.
Co-creation: Ethics by design with, not for, people
A trustworthy system starts with listening. That is why READI’s digital platform is being shaped together with the communities it aims to serve.
Patients, caregivers, healthcare professionals, and community organisations are involved in the design process through workshops, consultations, and feedback sessions. Their insights help define what the platform should look like, how it should communicate, and how it can remove barriers that often prevent people from joining clinical studies.
This collaborative process, known as co-creation, ensures that technology serves real needs. It also reflects a simple but powerful belief: ethical design begins with dialogue. By working hand in hand with the public, READI is creating a platform that people recognise as their own, transparent, accessible, and grounded in lived experience.

Protecting privacy and earning confidence
Digital innovation brings incredible opportunities for inclusion, but it also raises important questions about data protection. READI takes these responsibilities seriously.
The platform is being built with strong privacy and security safeguards to ensure that personal information remains confidential. Users will always have control over their data and will know exactly how it is being used. Information is protected through advanced encryption and pseudonymisation, which means that individual identities are never exposed.
This approach, often described as privacy by design, ensures that participation in research can be both safe and empowering. People should never have to choose between contributing to science and protecting their personal information, READI’s platform makes it possible to do both.
Independent ethics oversight
To maintain transparency and accountability, READI’s activities are guided by an independent Ethics Advisory Board made up of experts in bioethics, law, research, and patient advocacy. This group reviews ongoing work, provides recommendations, and ensures that the highest standards of integrity are maintained throughout.
In addition, dedicated ethical guidance is being developed to support everyone involved in the project, from technical developers to researchers and community partners. This ensures that decisions about technology and participation are always informed by ethical reflection and public values.
By combining scientific innovation with ethical governance, READI is demonstrating that research can advance rapidly without compromising on trust or responsibility.
Building a bridge between people and science
Once fully operational, READI’s digital platform will act as a bridge between research and the people it serves. It will help connect individuals to relevant studies, share accessible information about participation, and promote understanding of how inclusive research benefits everyone.
But its real achievement will be deeper: creating a culture of trust. By putting ethics, transparency, and co-creation at the core, READI is proving that innovation in healthcare does not have to come at the expense of human values.
In this model, technology becomes more than a tool, it becomes a trusted partner for people and communities who have long been overlooked in clinical research.
A shared commitment to ethical innovation
Trust in research is not built by technology alone. It grows from openness, respect, and collaboration. READI’s digital platform embodies this collective vision: a Europe where health research reflects the diversity of its people, and where ethical innovation sets a new standard for inclusion.
As the platform evolves, so too will the conversations that shape it; ensuring that ethics by design remains a living commitment, not a checkbox. Together, READI and its partners are helping reimagine what equitable, patient-centred research can look like.
